Types of Solar Panels In Pakistan
Monocrystalline (Mono)
This is the absolute standard for new residential and commercial installations. You’d be hard-pressed to find a reputable installer recommending anything else for a rooftop system today.
- How to Identify: They have a uniform dark black color, often with rounded edges on the cells.
- Efficiency Range: 19% to 22% is the standard for most Tier-1 brands available locally. High-efficiency models can reach up to 23-24%.
Sub-types you’ll hear about:
- PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell): This is now the standard technology for most new Mono panels. It adds a layer on the back of the cell that boosts efficiency, especially in low-light conditions (early morning, late afternoon, slight haze) which is a key advantage in Pakistan’s climate.
- Half-Cut Cells: You will see most panels have cells that are physically cut in half. This design reduces internal resistance and improves shade tolerance. If one section of the panel is shaded, the other half can still operate at full capacity. This is extremely common now.
- Bifacial: These are less common for rooftop use but are gaining traction in large-scale ground-mounted plants. They can generate power from both sides by capturing light reflected off the ground (e.g., from white gravel or a reflective surface).
Why it’s the #1 choice: The price difference between Mono and the older Polycrystalline technology has narrowed significantly. The superior efficiency (more power per square foot) and better performance in real-world Pakistani conditions (heat, dust, variable light) make it the only logical choice for most users.
Polycrystalline (Poly)
While still available in the market, their demand has plummeted. They are mostly found in older installations or being sold at a very low price point.
How to Identify: They have a blue, speckled, and less uniform appearance with square cells.
Efficiency Range: 16% to 18%
Why it faded: They are less efficient and require more space to generate the same amount of power as a Mono panel. In a country like Pakistan where rooftop space is often limited, maximizing output from every square foot is crucial. The minor cost saving is no longer worth the significant drop in performance.
Thin-Film
You will rarely see these in standard Pakistani homes or businesses. They have specialized applications.
How to Identify: They have a solid, uniform black appearance without visible cell lines. They are lightweight and can be flexible.
Efficiency Range: 10% to 13% (significantly lower than crystalline silicon).
Where you might see them: Used in some large-scale utility projects where land is cheap and abundant, or for very specific commercial applications (e.g., on large warehouse roofs that can’t handle heavy weight). They are not practical for residential use due to their low efficiency and large space requirement.
